MĂLINA IONESCU

Mălina Ionescu is a Romanian artist, film production and costume designer, based in Bucharest.

She graduated the National Arts University in 2009, where she studied Photography and Video-Art. One of her student experimental short films, „Romanians wear plastic bags”, was awarded a Best Experimental Film Prize in 2009.

After finishing studies she had several solo and group exhibitions, showing photography works, experimental film or installation. Some of her photography work is to be found in the Deutsche Telekom art collection.

In 2011, she signs the costumes for Adrian Sitaru’s „Best Intentions”, awarded at Locarno Film Festival in 2012. Over the years, she signed costumes for 9 feature films and 20 short films, mostly awarded at international film festivals.

Her debut in production design was in 2012 for “Child’s Pose” directed by Călin Peter Netzer, winner of the Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin Film Festival in 2013. Since then, she signed ten other feature films and over 20 short films as production designer. Andrei Cretulescu’s short film „Ramona”, won in Cannes Semaine de la Critique the Cannale + Award.

She also signed the Art Direction for Maren Ade’s “Tony Erdmann”, winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Film Festival 2016 and Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee.

For some films Ionescu signed both, production and costume design, like Cretulescu’s “Charleston”, selected in Locarno Film Festivals main competition in 2017 or “Two Lottery Tickets”, directed by Paul Negoescu, a box office success in Romania.

She recently finished shooting “Otto, the Barbarian”, the debut film of Ruxandra Ghitescu, where she also signed both costumes and production design.
She was a nominee for Best Costume Design in 2014, 2017, 2019 and for Best Production Design in 2019 at the Gopo Awards, the Romanian awards for film professionals.

In 2018 she became a member of the European Film Academy and was a member of the Special Jury that decides on the winners of some prizes (cinematography, production design, costume design, make-up, special effects, music, sound, and editing) at the EFA Awards.

She recently started to explore production and costume design for theatre.
